Tools for Teachers Winter Holidays Workshops

1. CONTEMPORARY COLLOQUIAL AMERICAN ENGLISH AS HEARD ON TV SITCOMS AND SOAP OPERAS
Wednesday, 6 August, 11:00 to 14:00 at SBS PALERMO, Coronel Diaz 1747, Buenos Aires. Fee: $35
This workshop will focus on a number of items not often introduced in advanced language textbooks despite the frequency with which they are heard in colloquial English, in particular the American English variety. An analysis of well over two hundred hours of recorded language reveals a substantial gap between the language the student is exposed to and the one which he will hear in contemporary or recent sitcoms and soap operas. Lexical items such as lame, blow off, tad, bail, or cave are not normally presented in the way they are used in colloquial language, nor are other contemporary expressions, even though possibly short lived such as off the hook, in a New York minute, or the slangy uses of words such as bag, rat, etc.

2. VULGAR ENGLISH
Wednesday, 6 August, 15: 00 to 18:00 at SBS PALERMO, Coronel Diaz 1747, Buenos Aires. Fee: $35
In this workshop we broach the subject of taboo words, vulgarities and insults. We discover the hidden meanings of innocent looking words and we reflect on how languages differ when expressing violence, anger and some biological processes. We attempt to answer the often asked question “How do you say...” which lots of students put to us. We will listen to a comedian elaborating on the seven words you cannot say on the radio or TV. Participants will receive a full set of exercises, an answer key, and an annotated bibliography.

If you do BOTH sessions (morning and afternoon) your fee is $60
